My beautiful niece, Liz, recently called to let me know that she and her long-time beau, Dan, have become engaged. After the congratulations and mazel tovs were said and I hung up the phone I began thinking. Now, anyone who knows these two even superficially knows that you’d be hard pressed to find a more intelligent, yet down to earth couple.

Imagine this: Your “financial advisor” that has managed your money for years gives you a call. “Sue”, he says, “small-caps are up this year and I think they’re going to continue to go up. I want to sell some of your bonds, which will continue to go down as interest rates start to rise and put that money to work in small-caps. Ok?

I’ve saved the best for last. After all, what could be better than having your child’s college education be free?! Grants and scholarships differ than loans, in that they don’t have to be paid back. Some are awarded on financial need, some on academic merit, and others on associations with different organizations.
